Bundesliga, 19th matchday – Friday: Eintracht Frankfurt wins against Mainz

Eintracht Frankfurt – 1. FSV Mainz 05 1:0 (0:0)

Mario Götze led Eintracht Frankfurt to victory against FSV Mainz 05 with his first goal of the season. Thanks to Götze’s header (73rd minute) to make it 1-0 (0-0) in front of 58,000 spectators, the Hessians consolidated their place in the top group of the Bundesliga. After their eighth game without a win at the weekend, Mainz is in danger of falling into a direct relegation zone.

In the first half, the fans mainly saw a tough struggle in the midfield and hardly any scenes in the goal area. The initially more aggressive Mainz team proved that defense was the top priority under coach Jan Siewert. At the same time, the coach wanted to improve the goal tally against Frankfurt and sent three offensive players onto the field: Jonathan Burkardt, Karim Onisiwo and Marco Richter.

In the 7th minute, Ansgar Knauff beat ex-Frankfurt player Dominik Kohr, but his shot from 14 meters landed in the arms of Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner. The guests had their greatest opportunity to score to date through a failed return, which Tuta was just able to slip to Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

Defects and mistakes on both sides

Even after the restart, it remained a game with few highlights but many shortcomings and mistakes. For Frankfurt, Farès Chaibi, who came on at half-time for new signing Donny van de Beek, was unable to provide more momentum and ideas. The Algerian only returned from the Africa Cup on Thursday evening. Hardly anyone expected Götze’s winning goal from a suspicious offside position anymore.

More moving than the game was the emotional farewell of the outgoing club president Peter Fischer from the Eintracht fans, who celebrated him before the game against Mainz. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, take care, family. Stay as you are. See you soon, take care,” said the 67-year-old entrepreneur. After more than 23 years in office, he will no longer be a candidate at the general meeting on February 5th.
