BTV Indoor State Championships: A Successful, Action-Packed Weekend of Tennis in Oberpullendorf

112 participants played a total of 133 matches in 17 competitions at the BTV Indoor State Championships in the Sport-Hotel-Kurz in Oberpullendorf. This means that the six courts in the district capital of Central Burgenland were fully occupied from morning to night from Thursday to Sunday. “We saw some great games. It was really fun,” said BTV president and host Günter Kurz at the Sunday award ceremony. There, State Sports Councilor Heinrich Dorner presented the winners’ trophies.

In the general class, the father-daughter team Mario and Lea Haider-Maurer won the title. The top seed from Trausdorf showed no weaknesses after two final defeats in previous years (note: 2023 against David Pichler, 2022 against Matthias Ujvary). The 39-year-old only played five games in his three appearances. In the final of the two top-seeded men, Markus Riegler from UTC Neudörfl/WienInvest Group was in a losing position. After less than an hour of play, Haider-Maurer won 6:0 and 6:1.

In the women’s race, after Kim Kühbauer’s cancellation due to a shoulder injury, there was an internal family duel between Kristin Haider-Maurer and daughter Lea. This game was exciting in the early stages. “From 3:2 onwards, Lea came into the game better and better. Even though I theoretically know how to trouble her, I couldn’t put her in any more distress. The serve was probably the biggest difference today,” said Kristin Haider-Maurer, who “can live with this defeat very well.”

The winners of the general class are Lea and Mario Haider-Maurer.

Onlooker Mario Haider-Maurer was pleased with his daughter’s performance: “Lea is now playing great tennis and is fully motivated.” Son Tim also carries the winning gene. In the final of the boys’ U9 competition, he defeated Niklas Schelnast in a high-class final 10:6 in the match tiebreak. In the U10 boys’ category, Bastian Pfeffer defended his title from the previous year, while the U11 competition was a sure win for the younger Felix Binder. Max Schuster, who won all four of his games, prevailed among the youngest.

In the U11 girls, Lisa Janitsch from TC Sport-Hotel-Kurz celebrated a home win, the other titles went to Flora Schaller (U10) and Lina Posch (U9). At the end of an intense tennis weekend, the men’s doubles took place. In the “North Summit” Stefan Gartner and Nikolaus Kojnek defeated the two new settlers Bernhard Scheidl and Florian Koppitsch in two sets. Scheidl suffered a second defeat in the final this Sunday. In the men’s 35, he lost to Christoph Winkler 10:12 in the match tiebreak. The men’s 40 final, which Gerhard Haider won 6:4, 6:2 against Andreas Braunizar, was less close. In the men’s 55 round-robin system, Manfred Vasik, like Günter Kurz and Roman Koppitsch, each had two wins and one defeat, but won due to the best set ratio. Neufeld’s Karl-Heinz Lang was happy about his victory in the men’s 65. He relegated Johann Emmer and Christian Janitsch to their places.
