Brenden Aaronson’s Hopeful Goal: A Boost for Union Berlin

Brenden Aaronson has not yet managed to score a competitive goal for Union Berlin. But a goal in the test against Bielefeld (2-0) gives the American hope.

On Wednesday, Brenden Aaronson took a seat at the An der Alten Försterei stadium in a box with numerous football fan articles and posters from music concerts hanging on the walls. Two TV teams and two print journalists were interested in the media round with the US national player, who has still not really arrived at 1. FC Union Berlin in terms of statistics.

Since the attacking midfielder was signed by Premier League relegated Leeds United last summer, the lightweight has not scored a single goal in eleven Bundesliga, six Champions League and two DFB Cup games.

It’s no wonder that Aaronson’s goal gave him a boost to make it 1-0 last Saturday in the friendly against third division team Arminia Bielefeld (final score: 2-0). “It’s a big motivation for me. I’ve had a lot of chances to score goals in the last few months and haven’t been able to finish it. This goal is good for me,” said Aaronson

Neither under coach Urs Fischer nor his successor Nenad Bjelica did Aaronson become a regular player. However, Aaronson is not thinking about giving up prematurely and quickly ending his time in Berlin in the current transfer period. He told his agent: “I’m here and I want to be here. I like the boys and the club.”

Aaronson on Bonucci: “I’m sad to see him go”

Aaronson doesn’t want to think about the time after the season yet. He currently feels at home in the Union family. Leonardo Bonucci has practically already left. He has not trained at Union since Tuesday. His official docking with Fenerbahce Istanbul seems to be just a formality.

Aaronson already misses Bonucci because he is a great guy and great player. “I can’t emphasize how much I learned from him. I’m sad to see him go. And I know most of us feel the same way,” Aaronson said.

Bonucci probably wouldn’t have started in the first Bundesliga game against SC Freiburg on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) anyway. On the other hand, the recently injured defenders Robin Gosens and Danilho Doekhi are working diligently on their comeback. The duo trained fully on Wednesday.
