Biathlon: Austrians come away empty-handed in Oberhof

Biathlon

There wasn’t much to gain for Austria’s biathletes on Friday at the opening World Cup competition in Oberhof. In difficult conditions, Simon Eder came 22nd as the best red-white-red athlete in the ten-kilometer sprint. The German Benedikt Doll took victory.

Three weeks after his sprint victory in Lenzerheide, Doll also won the World Cup continuation in Oberhof. The local hero won with a missed shot 1.8 seconds ahead of Sturla Holm Laegreid. His Norwegian compatriots Endre Strömsheim (+5.4/+1) and Johannes Thingnes Bö (+19.6/2) landed right behind.

The Salzburg Eder started directly or 30 seconds before the wind, and until the second shooting he had not lost more than this time to the World Cup dominator. Like Doll, the 40-year-old missed a perfect result at the shooting range with the last of his ten shots.

Komatz is also there in pursuit

But Eder wouldn’t have been able to keep up with the absolute top even without making a mistake. Doll took Germany’s fourth win of the season with starting number 14, but Laegreid’s final attack narrowly failed. Bö, on the other hand, was once again very strong on the trail, but made one mistake too many.

The race, which took place in difficult track conditions, was postponed by one day due to weather conditions; the women’s 7.5 km sprint is scheduled for 2:25 p.m. (live on ORF1 and in the live stream). Apart from Eder, only David Komatz (32nd/+1:54.5/1) from the ÖSV team made it into the men’s pursuit (12:25 p.m.) over 12.5 km scheduled for Saturday (12:25 p.m.). Felix Leitner disappointed in 77th place with three mistakes both at the shooting range and on the cross-country ski trail. His compatriots Dominic Unterweger and Magnus Oberhauser ended up even further behind. In total, only eight athletes shot clean.
