Despite another good, courageous performance, BG Göttingen is still stuck third-to-last in the basement of the Basketball Bundesliga table after the 90:100 (47:50) home defeat against German champions ratiopharm Ulm.

Göttingen – The Violets courageously stood up to the big favorites, especially in the strong third quarter, where they were 24:

16 won, in dire straits for minutes. In the final quarter, the title holders hit back and beat coach Oliveir Foucart’s team to overall victory with a score of 34:19.

“Yes, we imagined it would be so difficult,” said Ulm’s coach Anton (“Tonno”) Gavel afterwards. “We knew how difficult it was to survive in Göttingen. But we were better in the last quarter.”

Exactly true!

“A deserved victory,” admitted BG coach Foucart. “There were a lot of positives. We played with a lot of intensity in the second and third quarters. In the fourth, Ulm increased the intensity. But 13 ball losses in the second half (out of a total of 20, ed.) were too many. We also gave Ulm 20 free throws.”

It wasn’t the first time that the BG started “too softly,” according to Foucart, but picked themselves up in good time, with Osaro Jürgen Rich in particular standing out this time. The man from the Baltic Sea coast (born in Lübeck) with the energetic approach scored ten points in the first half and six in the second – his most successful appearance for the Violets to date.

Göttingen does not belong where it is now

But the Göttingen team also had other assets in Latvian center Karlis Silins and ex-Ulm player Fedor Zugic (after recent lackluster games). Zach Ensminger and Bodie Hume also earned honorable mention, while playmaker Umoja Gibson was obviously in a slump, only scoring two points but committing six turnovers. The Australian Grant Anticevich didn’t contribute a single point either. Will he become another departure candidate after Deondre Burns? Foucart would ideally like to sign a sturdy “foursome” (power forward) in addition to a playmaker. It remains to be seen what will come of it.

It is typical for the BG game that the good scenes are always replaced by bad ones – the question of the almost non-existent consistency. While the Violets thrilled the 3,447 spectators in the sold-out S-Arena in the third quarter, in which Silins (2), Zugic and Mathis Mönninghoff sank four three-pointers, with their best performance in a long time, they had to put an end to Ulm’s strong ball movement in the final section to oppose less and less. Zugic’s three-pointer to make it 90:94 fueled the last hope of a surprise, but mainly with the help of Ulm’s top scorer Karim Jallow, the champions, who also received (too) many whistles from the referees, retained the upper hand.

So: You can’t blame the BG for this defeat. Nevertheless, the danger of relegation remains latent, especially since Crailsheim won. But on Wednesday it’s “Euro time” again: second home game in the second round of the Europe Cup against FC Porto.
