Belgian Football Association Makes Final Decision on Club Matches

The Referee Department of the Belgian Football Association has decided that the matches of Club Brugge against KV Mechelen and KRC Genk against Anderlecht will not be replayed.

This follows complaints from both clubs about refereeing errors. Club Brugge had objected to Igor Thiago’s goal being wrongly disallowed for alleged offside, with VAR Kevin Van Damme allegedly overlooking defender Sandy Walsh.

However, according to the PRD, this was a human error. The football association’s website states: “The PRD has ruled that it concerns a refereeing error in the assessment of a game fact.”

As a result, the competitions are definitively closed and no appeal is possible to a disciplinary body of the KBVB, but possibly to the BAS. Genk is considering taking further steps. It is not clear at Club what the reaction will be.
