Austria’s Davis Cup Team Gears Up for World Group I Play-Off Duel with Ireland

Davis-Cup

Austria’s Davis Cup team can draw on everything in the World Group I play-off duel with Ireland on February 3rd and 4th in Limerick. Sebastian Ofner and Dominic Thiem are the only ÖTV top 100 players in the lineup, while Filip Misolic and Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler were also nominated for the doubles.

“I’m pleased that we have almost the best possible team on paper in Ireland,” said ÖTV team captain Jürgen Melzer on Tuesday. “I am very confident that we will be able to cope with this mandatory task well with this line-up,” said Melzer. Anything other than a return to World Group I would be a bitter disappointment given the starting position.

Yurij Rodionov, Austria’s number three, is not there. The world number 111 will play a Challenger tournament in Koblenz after consultation with Melzer. Misolic is not far behind him in the ranking at 145th. Ofner is currently 37th, Thiem is in 92nd place. The Irish are far away from these spheres.

Ireland in an outsider role

The squad includes five players who are not in the top 1,000: Osgar O’Hoisin, Michael Agwi, Simon Carr, Conor Gannon and vice-captain David O’Hare. None of these players have ever been in the top 500 in singles, only O’Hare, who was number 117 in the world in 2017, achieved this in doubles.

The game will be played on hard court at the UL Sports Arena on the grounds of the University of Limerick. The draw will take place on February 2nd.
