Australian Soccer Player’s Career and Tragic Death: A Remembrance

The Australian began his career at Wollongong Wolves in 1995, before signing for Brisbane Strikers in 1997. After a spell at Bellmare Hiratsuka in Japan and a return to Australia, at Parramatta Power, the defender tried his hand at Europe, joining the Netherlands and Feyenoord in 2000.

Loaned to Roosendaal then to Lyn Oslo, he returned to Australia in 2002 to play for Sydney Olympic and Brisbane Strikers.

Laybutt arrived in Belgium in 2003, at Mouscron, with whom he played 30 matches. The following year, he joined La Gantoise, where he remained until 2007, making 70 appearances. He then returned to Australia, to Newcastle United Jets, where he ended his career in 2008 due to injuries.

Laybutt has worn the Australian national team jersey 18 times. He participated in the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 with the U23 team.

According to Australian media, Laybutt had been missing since Saturday. Police found his body on Sunday in a bushy area near Cabarita, New South Wales. Police told Australian media his death was not suspicious.
