Atlanta Falcons Pursuing Legendary Coach Bill Belichick for Head Coaching Position

The Atlanta Falcons appear to be the only NFL team in the race to sign legendary Bill Belichick and both sides will take a major step forward this weekend.

According to the NFL Network, the Georgia team will hold a second interview with the 71-year-old. On Monday, the Falcons confirmed that they had met with the former New England Patriots driver to make him their next head coach.

Among other things, Belichick would have met with owner Arthur Blank and the interest would be mutual, although an agreement would not be imminent according to the same source. At least five other candidates have reportedly interviewed with the organization.

The Falcons have been looking for a new head instructor since firing Arthur Smith on Jan. 8. Atlanta failed to qualify for the playoffs for the sixth straight year. During Smith’s three seasons in office, the club went 7-10 each time.

A week ago, Belichick’s 24-season association with the Patriots ended by mutual agreement. The team was left out of the playoff picture for the third time in four years. Former star linebacker Jerod Mayo succeeded him.
