Atlanta Falcons Dismiss Head Coach Arthur Smith After Three Playoff-Less Years

Atlanta announced the dismissal of the coach, who could not lead the franchise to the playoffs during his three years in office

The Atlanta Falcons decided to change course this Sunday night and announced the firing of head coach Arthur Smith.

Arthur Smith led the Falcons for three seasons in which he compiled a 21-30 record, all finishing with an identical 7-10 record, and never qualified for the playoffs.

This was Arthur Smith’s first experience as a head coach after working as offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans from 2019 to 2020.

The Falcons hired Arthur Smith for the 2021 season, replacing interim head coach Raheem Morris, who took over after Dan Quinn was fired in the 2020 season after an 0-5 start.

Arthur Smith, recognized for his offensive vocation, could not establish a consistent attack in Atlanta, mainly due to the instability in the quarterback position, in which he had Matt Ryan, Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke as starters.

The Falcons have not been able to qualify for the postseason since 2017, which was their last winning season at 10-6.

Atlanta entered Week 18 with a slim chance of advancing to the postseason, but needed to beat the New Orleans Saints and have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lose to the Carolina Panthers to advance as NFC South champions.
