Vitali Klitschko, mayor of the city of Kyiv, has assured that a “non-residential building” has caught fire. One of the projectiles did not explode, however, although it forced the evacuation of all the residents of the house.

Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, close to the Russian border, has also been attacked and has paid the highest price. The first reports suggested that several residential buildings have been damaged, with around thirty apartments affected. Gas pipes that are used to heat the houses have also been set on fire, due to the impacts of the projectiles. Among the victims identified so far are two women, aged 56 and 40, while 35 people have had to be hospitalized, including children aged 10 and 12.

In total, and according to the Ukrainian military, Russia has launched 41 missiles against Ukraine. Air defenses have destroyed 21 of them. Moscow has launched a combined attack using cruise, ballistic, air and anti-aircraft missiles, according to Ukraine’s air force.

On the ground, although the eastern fronts remain relatively stable, the truth is that, according to information from the think tank American Institute for the Study of War, Russian troops have made slight advances south of the city of Avdiivka, a very difficult position for President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s troops to hold.

NATO maneuvers

The new Russian attack comes just hours before NATO begins later this week its biggest military maneuvers since the Cold War, involving some 90,000 members of the Alliance.

General Chris Cavoli made the announcement last Thursday, saying they would rehearse NATO’s execution of its regional plans, the first defense plans the alliance has drawn up in decades, detailing how to respond to a hypothetical Russian attack. . More than 50 ships will also participate, from aircraft carriers to destroyers; more than 80 fighter jets, helicopters and drones; and at least 1,100 combat vehicles, including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles. The exercises will last until the end of May.

And although the hypothesis that supports the maneuvers is a possible Russian attack, this Tuesday, from Brussels, the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, assured that there is no imminent Russian threat against any member of NATO “We do all of this [les maniobres] to ensure that we have the forces to eliminate any room for miscalculation or misunderstanding with Moscow about our willingness to protect every inch of NATO territory, and while doing so, there will be no attack on NATO territory NATO,” he said.
