Argentine striker Germán Cano was recognized as the best player in America in 2023. After having won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense, the striker won the “King of America” award given by the Uruguayan newspaper El País.

In the traditional survey that is carried out every year and in which 250 journalists from across the continent vote, Cano gathered 167 votes and became the oldest footballer to win the recognition. At 35 years old, he broke the mark held by Enzo Francescoli (1995), Romario (2000) and Juan Sebastián Verón (2009), all of them elected at the time at 34 years old.
The triumph of the Argentine forward who scored 40 goals in 59 games he played in 2023 was truly extensive. He surpassed the Uruguayans Luis Suárez, who added 17, and Nicolás De la Cruz, with eight.

With only one semester in United States soccer, Lionel Messi obtained four votes. Among the Argentines, the following were also taken into account: Boca goalkeeper Sergio “Chiquito” Romero (2), Cicinnati midfielder Luciano Acosta and Godoy Cruz player Hernán López Muñoz, both with one vote.
Best coach: Diniz beat Bielsa and Scaloni
In the best coach category, Brazilian Fernando Diniz, champion of the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense and interim coach of his national team, won. He gathered 101 votes and surpassed the Argentines Marcelo Bielsa (44) and Lionel Scaloni (34).

The ideal 11, with footballers from Boca and River
Both River and Boca contributed players to America’s ideal 11. According to the survey by the newspaper El País, the already ex-Millonario Nicolás de la Cruz (recently transferred to Flamengo) and the Xeneizes Sergio “Chiquito” Romero and Luis Advíncula were among the most notable of the year.
The team, in this way, was made up of: Romero; Advíncula, Nino (Fluminense from Brazil), the Paraguayan Gustavo Gómez (Palmeiras from Brazil) and the Uruguayan Joaquín Piquerez (Palmeiras); the Colombian Jhon Arias (Fluminense), the Brazilians André (Fluminense) and Alan Patrick (Inter of Brazil) and De La Cruz (River); the Uruguayan Luis Suárez (Gremio of Brazil) and Germán Cano (Fluminense).
