Analyzing the Worst Playoff Records in Recent NFL History: Detroit Lions’ Chance for Improvement

There are eight teams that remain in the fight for the NFL playoffs and with the dream of writing their history in gold letters in Super Bowl LVIII.

But, fans will have their attention on the Divisional Round, because in one of the peculiar cases of teams, there is a team that appears in the history books for an unseemly reason: which NFL team has the worst record in games postseason?

From January 1999 to January 2023, two teams have a postseason winning percentage below .250: Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins; This is the list of the ten worst playoff records in recent times.

Worst NFL playoff records: 1999-2023

  • Detroit Lions (1-4), .200
  • Miami Dolphins (2-7), .222
  • Celeveland Browns (1-3), .250
  • Washington Commanders (2-6), .260
  • Dallas Cowboys (4-11), .267
  • Chicago Bears (3-6), .333
  • Cincinnati Bengals (5-9), .357
  • Minnesota Vikings (6-10), .375
  • Los Angeles Chargers (5-8), .385
  • Atlanta Falcons (6-9), .400
  • The Detroit Lions can improve their playoff record

Last weekend was historic for sports in the city of Detroit as the Lions won a playoff game for the first time in 32 years.

Detroit made the playoffs in impressive form after going 13-5 in the regular season. Dan Campbell’s team has been transformed with quarterback Jared Goff as its leader after his arrival in 2021 from the Rams.

That victory ended the longest winless streak in playoff history and set up a Divisional Round clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With the Miami Dolphins’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card Round, they will not be able to improve their 2-7 record in the last 25 years; so a Lions win this weekend would leave them with a 2-4 record and a playoff winning percentage of .333.

Even if they hypothetically made it to the NFC Conference Championship game, their potential playoff winning percentage of .286 (2-5) would be higher than that of the Dolphins, Browns, Commanders and Cowboys.
