The Super-G in Wengen, Switzerland, is overshadowed by a serious fall. Veteran Alexis Pinturault has to be treated for a long time and is then flown out. The winner says he couldn’t be happy with the pictures.

The German speed aces continue to lag behind the competition in the Alpine Ski World Cup. In the Super-G in Wengen on Friday, Andreas Sander was initially the best DSV athlete, a good three seconds behind winner Cyprien Sarrazin and was therefore in 24th place after 39 starters. Romed Baumann was 3.82 seconds slower than the Frenchman, who prevailed ahead of the Swiss local hero and favorite Marco Odermatt (+0.58) and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde from Norway (+1.00).

The race was overshadowed by a crash by French veteran Alexis Pinturault, who was treated for a long time on the track and then flown away in a helicopter. Pictures of a fall after a jump shortly before the finish raise fears of a serious knee injury.

Cries of pain could be heard on television from Pinturault, who had become the father of a small daughter just a few days ago. A diagnosis was initially pending. “It’s hard to be happy after my run when something like that happens to a friend,” said Pinturault’s compatriot and winner Sarrazin on ZDF.

The departure from Wengen is on Saturday

Unlike the in-form Frenchman, there is hardly anything going on with the German ski racers at the moment. After Baumann and Sander each made it onto the World Cup podium at the end of the previous season, only one German place in the top ten in seven speed races so far this winter. On Saturday (12.30 p.m./ZDF and Eurosport) the traditional Lauberhorn descent is on the program in Wengen.

A Super-G was also on the program for the women on Friday. In Zauchensee, Austria’s skiers celebrated a home victory. Cornelia Hütter won ahead of Kajsa Vickhoff Lie from Norway (+0.09 seconds) and the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami (+0.21). The 31-year-old gave the skiing nation its first women’s victory this World Cup winter. “It was really cool skiing today,” said Hütter. The German starters missed the top ranks.
