Alexander Zverev Leads Germany to Semifinals and Eyes Australian Open Victory

Germany is already in the semifinals of the United Cup and much of the credit goes to Alexander Zverev. The German has started the year at a high level and there are many who hope to see him display tennis even better than before he was seriously injured at Roland Garros 2022. In fact, they even place him among the favorites for the Australian Open.

During his press conference, the German team seemed satisfied, but above all the words of Zverev stood out, who believes that he is once again being feared by his rivals and that things are going the way he wants again.

Full of victories so far

“Yes, definitely. But I’m happy to be able to help with the team, because last year I really couldn’t. I lost all my individual matches. I won a mixed match with Laura and honestly it didn’t matter much. Obviously I’m very happy to be able to help the team. We talked about this with Angie (Kerber). I mean, it’s happening to her now. There were a few times during the Hopman Cup where we got to the final and I couldn’t win an individual match. So far it’s been the opposite, but , you know, it can change quickly, especially for a player like Angie, it can change in one or two points, and then you feel your game. Then you start winning suddenly. In 2020 I remember I played the ATP Cup, I lost all three matches “During my ATP Cup, I think I only won one set and then I reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open where I had a good chance of reaching the final. Everything can change quickly and I’m sure that will happen to Angie.”

The Olympic Games, one of the objectives of 2024

“It will be one of the biggest events this year, that’s for sure. Along with the Grand Slams, it’s the biggest event. I’m really looking forward to getting back there. I’m really going to look to represent Germany as well. Obviously, you know, playing “On the clay courts of Roland Garros we will do it twice this year, so I hope to have great successes there.”

His rivalry with Tsitsipas

“The level has been quite high. I had a little pressure because we were 1-0 down, but today I felt good on the court and I’m happy with that.”

From Miñaur, next rival (H2H 6-1 in favor of Zverev)

“I didn’t know he was 6-1 with him. One of the matches I was referring to earlier was against him in the ATP Cup. He’s playing some of the best tennis of his life, right? Beating Novak in sets corridos always shows that you are playing very well. Also, the last time we played was probably in Rome 2022, so that was a while ago. Things have changed a little bit. I think it has improved a lot, getting closer to the top 10 as well. I want I mean, of course, it’s better to have that kind of record before him than the opposite, but I expect a difficult match. Especially here, I think he will be very motivated and the whole Australian team will be very motivated, and the crowd definitely plays a factor in But I’m looking forward to another difficult game.”

Keys to De Minaur’s improvement

“The first thing is his serve. His serve is what stands out the most of all the improvements he made. He has always been fast, a great returner and a great baseline player, but he never had a great serve, and that has changed, I would say , in the last two years, maybe 18 months. He’s really getting some variety in his service. I think that’s the biggest improvement he’s made in the last 18 months.”
