The first Grand Slam tournament of the year begins on Sunday with the Australian Open. The preparatory tournaments are currently still underway, including in Adelaide. There was a high-class duel between Alexander Bublik (ATP 25) and Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 15) in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
The Kazakh Bublik won the game in three sets with 6:3, 6:7 and 7:5. What was particularly worth talking about was not the final result, but rather a service game from Bublik. The 26-year-old gets the first point after a stop ball and a subsequent no-look forehand winner. Because the stop ball worked so well, Bublik added another one to make it 30-0 – accompanied by a smug smile. And as the saying goes? All good things come in threes. With the stopball hat trick, Bublik increased the score to 40-0.
However, Bublik doesn’t bring the game home with a stop ball. The Kazakh has something special up his sleeve for this. First, Bublik serves from bottom to top – that alone is already frowned upon in professional tennis. But Bublik goes one better. Bublik follows Musetti’s return with a seemingly demotivated tweener, who promptly becomes a successful pass ball and thus a winner.
After the win against Musetti, the next hurdle in Adelaide in the semi-finals is Jack Draper. If Bublik wins this game too, he will face Czech Jiri Lehecka in the final.
