With a 6-1 record, Alexander Zverev was optimistic going into the United Cup semi-final against Alex de Minaur. However, the Australian achieved his only success in 2020 in front of a home crowd at the ATP Cup.

In the evenly balanced first set, both players held their serves until 5:5, without allowing a single break chance. Suddenly the 24-year-old De Minaur wobbled in the eleventh game and was faced with three running break balls at 0:40, of which Zverev was able to use the first. The Hamburger served the first round successfully with his own serve and finished with a backhand volley.
