The MotoGP rider Aleix Espargaró will participate in the 23rd edition of the Vuelta a Ibiza MTB SCOTT by Shimano, which will be held from March 29 to 31 and in which more than a thousand riders will meet, partnering with former cyclist Juanjo Lobato, who ended his professional career in 2023.
“It is a dream couple. Aleix is in love with cycling and it is fortunate that he joins his participation with that of Juanjo Lobato. We are sure that they will get into the box in one of the stages. We are going to have a very competitive edition,” said the person in charge. of the Juanjo Planells organization.
In his participation in 2021, Aleix already managed to secure a third place with Oliver Avilés, and now he will seek to get on the podium again with Lobato. A professional since 2011 in the Andalucía-Caja Granada team, the Cadiz native played for Euskaltel Euskadi, Movistar, Team LottoNL-Jumbo and Nippo-Vini Fantini before returning in 2020 to Euskaltel-Euskadi, where he retired.
Lobato competed in seven Grand Tours – one Tour de France, two Giros d’Italia and four Tours of Spain – and achieved 15 wins as a professional, among which his victories in the Tour Down Under, the Vuelta a Andalucía and the Dubai Tour stand out. This time, just a few months after his retirement, he will debut in the Vuelta a Ibiza MTB SCOTT by Shimano.
“It is the first time I have competed in a mountain bike event and I am very excited. I really want to be able to ride around Ibiza and see if everything that Aleix and Morcillo have told me about the island and the event is true. They paint it very well and make you want to experience it for yourself,” said Lobato.
