FC Bayern is clearly winning at the start of the new football year. But Thomas Tuchel’s performance is apparently not enough. Afterwards, two stars in particular felt the coach’s criticism: Leroy Sané and Harry Kane.

In the first game after the death of club icon Franz Beckenbauer (78), Bayern won confidently 3-0 (1-0) against Hoffenheim. There could be peace, joy and pancakes among the German record champions. But that was far from the case: coach Thomas Tuchel (50) handed out after the final whistle despite the win against Hoffenheim.

After the successful league start to 2024, Tuchel first shot against his superstar Leroy Sané (28), whom he highly values - although the national player prepared both goals from national team colleague Jamal Musiala (20).

“Has so much potential”

After the game, Tuchel explained in an interview with Sat.1: “Everyone has to play more physically. He has so much physical potential when it comes to running and sprinting. He has to work on it, otherwise it’s not enough for me. When he does that, he can physically dominate the players. There is room for improvement.”

Then Harry Kane (30) also got one. The 100 million euro striker played a very bad game for 72 minutes, but then had two good chances and scored in the 90th minute to make it 3-0. In doing so, he equaled Robert Lewandowski’s (35, now FC Barcelona) first-round record: 22 goals in 16 games!

But Tuchel still wasn’t happy about that: “Leroy and Harry didn’t have their best day,” he said. The coach then followed up on “DAZN” – against his own fans because the ultras in the south curve were silent for the first twelve minutes: “It was still a boycott of the mood because of DFL investor drama or crime, whatever. It’s time for a home game again with enthusiasm and so on. Franz Beckenbauer would certainly have wanted it to be a football festival from the stands.”

Access Mukiele?

That’s not all: When the Bayern coach was asked about a new right-back like PSG star Nordi Mukiele (26), he answered the question surprisingly tight-lipped and almost irritated. “We did a lot of things so often that at some point you thought it was normal: we arrived so often with 15, 16 instead of 18 players that at some point you stopped noticing it,” said Tuchel. “For example, we threw Dayot Upamecano in Dortmund for 60 minutes after six weeks of muscle injury without playing a minute. Because the performance was still so stable, it was normal at some point. The fact that Konrad Laimer is now a right-back is somehow just normal, even though he was signed as a midfielder and is best there.”

And while Tuchel was at it, he also made an announcement to his stars about the training camp in Faro, Portugal (January 14th to 18th). The trainer at Sat.1: “You will be enslaved!” Captain Manuel Neuer (37) is already preparing for a tough program: “We will have a relatively large number of units in Portugal! But we’re looking forward to this journey.”

At least Tuchel was satisfied with the points scored for Kaiser Franz, who died on January 7th: “But we had decided to win exactly this game. We’re glad we did it.”
