a skiing paradise (two hours from Italy)

We have come to know the name Lenzerheide because this Swiss town has hosted the finals of the Alpine Skiing World Cup for some time. However, many do not know that this location in the Albula region (Canton of Grisons) is also a fantastic place and above all close to the bordermaking the location very attractive – even for just one weekend – at least for a good part of Northern Italy.

Lenzerheide: a skiing paradise (two hours from Italy)

200-odd km of track on both sides of the valley: the news of the year lies in the fact that it has finally been connected to the nearby Arosa – a luxury ski resort with a high concentration of 5-star hotels – adding altri 70 km al ski area.

The connection between the two ski areas is via a futuristic “gondola”. In fact, a panoramic cable car connects the peaks of two different mountains making a “pylonless” flight of over a kilometre. A thrill worth the trip.

The most famous slope in the entire ski area? It sure is there Silvano Beltrametti (in honor of a skier from the Swiss national team who was paralyzed after an accident during a CdM race): a very famous and paradoxically (almost) always closed slope: the International Federation prepares it and keeps it “as a spare” in case it jumps at the last moment another race for too much or too little snow. Tourists can walk a few hundred meters in the arrival area.

Fantastic ski slopes but also many other outdoor activities to enjoy. Here, for example, curling is tradition and in the center there are several fields open to the public where you can play or just try throwing stones. You go skating, obviously, during the Christmas period you even play ice-tennis (skating on a frozen field), you go sledding and obviously you go cross-country skiing. Here every winter there are numerous international competitions and the shooters/athletes frolic about 56 km of tracks, for both classic and skating.

Ok, Switzerland is not recognized as one of the homelands of good food but for a few days you can happily try dishes like roesti with dried carne salada (a sort of local bresaola) and mature mountain cheeses. On the slopes, however, the Rifugio Motta – run by a Ticino family with a passion for cooking – will be able to brighten up a foggy day with mushroom soups served in characteristic saucepans and traditional Alpine dishes revisited and served directly in the pans.
