Just over 8.9 million working people will directly benefit from the 20 percent increase in the minimum wage that was approved for this year. According to the Council of Representatives of the National Commission of Minimum Wages (Conasami), minimum wages went from 207.44 to 248.93 pesos per day. Salaries in 61 professions also increased by 20 percent.
It is the fifth time that in the current administration a salary increase has been achieved by consensus between workers, businessmen and the government, Conasami highlighted. With this new increase, the recovery of the purchasing power of the minimum wage will add 110 percent between 2018 and 2024. It will cover 1.73 times the income poverty line of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).
According to studies by the Technical Directorate of Conasami, thanks to the increases in the minimum wage starting in 2019, the gender wage gap was reduced by 25 percent. While with the increases from 2019 to 2022, the number of people in poverty was reduced by 23.7 percent. That is, of the 5.1 million people who escaped poverty between 2018 and 2022, it can be attributed that 4.1 million were exclusively due to the recovery of the purchasing power of the minimum wage.
According to Conasami, the increase was made from the minimum wage in force in 2023 plus the sum of an Independent Recovery Amount (MIR) of 27.40 pesos for the rest of the Republic and 41.26 pesos for the Free Zone of the Northern Border and a fixation increase of six percent.

About the MIR, it is a mechanism whose purpose is the recovery of the purchasing power of salaries. It is an absolute amount in pesos. It is not used as a reference to set other current salaries such as contractual, federal, state or municipal salaries. It was applied for the first time in 2017.
Professional salaries
The increases in professional minimum wages were far behind, according to what the Representative of the Labor Sector before Conasami, José Luis Carazo Preciado, told El Sol de México, therefore, they were also increased by 20 percent for 2024. These are trades as a bricklayer, if you work in the Free Zone of the Northern Border, your salary will be 374.89 pesos per day; and those who exercise this profession in the rest of the Republic will receive 287.17 pesos per day for their work.

An official carpenter who is dedicated to the manufacture and repair of furniture will receive with the increase a daily salary of 374.89 pesos, if he lives in any of the 45 municipalities bordering the United States border. Official carpenters in the rest of the country will have 282.44 pesos.
