The first 40 years of the Bernalda Archers

40 years have already passed since a small group of boys led by prof. Rocco Biagio Dimonte enjoyed shooting arrows after basketball training.
In fact, in 1984, the Arcieri Bernalda company was born which contributed greatly to the development of promotional and competitive archery activity throughout the Basilicata region.
A peculiar characteristic of the first years was the participation, especially among young people, with appreciable results in the few competitions available “on the federal calendar”: from participation in the Youth Games to the Regions’ Cup, which, gradually, over the years, saw us always participating.
In this corner of the world enclosed between three lands: in the centre, between Calabria, Campania and Puglia, the ASD Arcieri Bernalda, on the Ionian coast near Metaponto, has been and has become a point of reference for the sport of archery. Not only does it include among its members archers from neighboring towns such as Policoro, Grassano, Ferrandina, but also archers from other regions who in the summer period, on holiday on our wonderful beaches, find hospitality at our facilities.
In the meantime, we like to remember that a couple of guys from that small group from 40 years ago contributed to the growth of the company that counts today: a 2nd level instructor, three 1st level instructors, a master archer, three directors of shots, a referee; of having organized countless “federal calendar” outdoor and indoor competitions, and various editions of the regional “Pinocchio Trophy”. In 2023 we were given the opportunity to organize the national archery phase of the “CONI Trophy”. At all editions of the national phases of the “Regions Cup” and the “Pinocchio Trophy”, our club has always been present with its own athletes. In recent years, we have also participated in the national phases for the Italian titles, remembering the most recent one: the 2nd place of Antonio Silletti, in Seravezza (UD), for the Men’s Boys Class.
To date, much has been done since 1984 and much still remains to be done to grow archery in our region. The fundamental work of the ASD Arcieri Bernalda in all these years has been and remains to bring more and more young people to approach this difficult but at the same time unique and exciting sport.
