16-year-old Andreeva sweeps Jabeur off the pitch

She is considered the super talent in women’s tennis – and gave an impressive sample of her potential at the Australian Open. In less than an hour, 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andrejewa (WTA 47) swept world number 6 Ons Jabeur off the court. She left just two games to the three-time Grand Slam finalist in a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Andrejewa started her meteoric rise last spring in Switzerland with two victories in ITF tournaments. Then she reached the third round as a qualifier at the French Open and the round of 16 at Wimbledon. A year ago she was number 292, but after her first Australian Open she will at least reach the top 35. At least, because after this performance she will also be the favorite in the 3rd round against compatriot Kamila Rachimova (WTA 90) or the Frenchwoman Diane Parry (WTA 72).

Co-favorite and local hero easily in the 3rd round

The second round did not prove to be a big hurdle for both co-favorite Jannik Sinner (ATP 4) and the local Alex de Minaur (ATP 10). Sinner won all three sets 6:2 against the Dutchman Jesper de Jong (ATP 161). The 22-year-old Italian is now in the third round in Melbourne, where he will face Argentinian Sebastian Baez (ATP 29).

De Minaur also only lost six games against Sinner’s compatriot Matteo Arnaldi (ATP 41) and prevailed 6:3, 6:0, 6:3 after just over two hours. The 24-year-old Australian will face an Italian again in the next round. De Minaur meets Flavio Cobolli.

The American Taylor Fritz (ATP 12) also showed no weakness. He only needed an hour and a half for his three-set win against Hugo Gaston (ATP 97). In the 6:0, 6:3, 6:1 win, the 26-year-old hit eleven aces and didn’t allow himself to be broken once.

US Open winner only with minor problems

Coco Gauff (WTA 4) is also in the round of 16 after a hard-fought first set and a clear second set. The US Open winner defeated her American compatriot 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 in 1:44 hours. In the next round, the 19-year-old will again face a compatriot in Alycia Parks (WTA 82). Parks defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandes 7:5, 6:4 in the second round.

Carlos Alcaraz was the last player to tackle the first round of the Australian Open, which was spread over three days for the first time. In his first serious fight since the Masters semi-final in November, the Wimbledon winner and world number two needed around an hour to get going. After a 74-minute first set, the 20-year-old Spaniard was hot against Richard Gasquet, who was 17 years older than him, and launched into a gala with numerous shots with a wow factor. The end result was 7:6 (7:5), 6:1, 6:2, which underlines Alcaraz’s status as a title contender – even if he needed five match points.
