14 Children from Cyriakusschule Bottrop Earn White-Yellow Belts in Judo at Final Tournament

14 children from the Cyriakusschule Bottrop earned their white-yellow belt, the first step in every judo career, at the final tournament of the Values.School.Judo project. In the Dieter Renz Hall they were awarded the 8th Kyu on Friday, January 19, 2024, in front of all the fighters present, their parents, relatives and teachers. The 8th Kyu is the first classification into the student grades in Judo. Anyone who later achieves 1st Kyu is a candidate for 1st Dan.

Sofia Zittel, Tim Suchodlski, Adisa Meyer, Alexandra Gkotsi, Mohammed and Adam Khodr, Kathleen Sieg, Noemi and Ignazio Tannorella, Riemas Goda, Paula Rost, Berkin Atac, Neschbir Ismael and Aras Celik trained diligently at the partner club JC 66 Bottrop during the project weeks and learned the first judoka moves and techniques.

Falling, holding and throwing, bowing and respecting, fighting, winning and losing, that’s all part of being a real judo fighter. “The young fighters now also know this and from now on they will proudly wear their first student grade, the white and yellow belt that ELE, as a project partner, gives to every child,” said project trainer Sven Helbing, who himself has 3rd Dan in judo .

Of course there was also fighting at the final tournament and the atmosphere both on the tatami and in the well-filled stands was great. Almost 200 children and interested spectators such as parents and teachers found their way to the large hall of the Dieter Renz sports hall on Friday, where the JC 66 Bundesliga fighters usually hold their home fights. “With a total of around 600 guests, the hall is quite full and there is a great atmosphere. The students of the Cyriakusschule absolutely deserved this, because they really tried hard, were brave, after all, none of them had ever fought in front of such a large audience and they also looked after each other in a friendly manner. That’s how judo should be,” Helbing praised his protégés.

Next week, the next little fighters will start the Values.School.Judo project weeks with the Paulschule and they too will be able to show what they have learned at the end. Maybe there will be judoka there again who, after completing the exam, will be able to put on a new white and yellow belt.

The Values.School.Judo project is funded by the ELE.
