with the returning Nkunku, Chelsea eliminate Newcastle and go to the semi-finals

The Blues dismissed the Magpies on penalties this Tuesday, in the quarter-finals of the English League Cup. And this thanks to a goal signed by the Ukrainian Mykhailo Mudryk.

Chelsea defeated Newcastle on penalties on Tuesday in the quarter-final of the English League Cup, a match in which French striker Christopher Nkunku made his first official appearance in a Blues jersey. Chelsea, who defeated the last finalist of the competition at home (1-1, 4-2 tab), joins Fulham and Middlesbrough in the last four. The final quarter will pit Liverpool against West Ham on Wednesday (9:00 p.m.).

At Stamford Bridge, the Magpies opened the scoring thanks to Callum Wilson (16th, 1-0) despite the blatant domination of the Blues, who came up against Nick Pope’s replacement goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka (22nd), or the crossbar (7th). The second half started on the same basis with the Londoners monopolizing the ball but ineffective.

Nkunku, winning comeback

The entry into play in the 69th minute of Christopher Nkunku, injured in a knee in pre-season, did good to Mauricio Pochettino’s team. This first official appearance for the 26-year-old international (10 caps) since his summer transfer from RB Leipzig allowed Chelsea’s attack to gain more weight. The equalizer came in added time from Mykhailo Moudrik (90th + 2, 1-1). Nkunku scored his shot on goal allowing Chelsea to make a decisive break after Kieran Trippier’s miss.

The Blues, who are languishing in the middle of the table in the Premier League (10th in the standings), are now only two victories away from a domestic coronation not seen since 2018, an English Cup won against Manchester United.

Two more quarters were played Tuesday evening. In a duel between Premier League residents, Fulham also beat Everton on penalties (1-1, 7-6 tab) and the D2 club Middlesbrough put an end (3-0) to the hopes of Petit Poucet of D3 Port Vale.
