Nick Kyrgios is working hard to be ready for the first Grand Slam tournament of 2024 at Melbourne Park. At least that’s what you hear. But will he really serve at the Australian Open? Australian tennis greats have their doubts. Many even believe he won’t be competitive again until Wimbledon 2024 at the earliest.

Kyrgios, 28, has been out of action since pulling out of the 2023 Australian Open due to knee and wrist problems.

In Melbourne – but not as a player?

Kyrgios himself recently said that “the stars had to align” for him to be fit in time for the Australian Open.

Australian coach and former professional Wayne Arthurs cannot imagine Kyrgios being back before Wimbledon: “Will a 20 percent Kyrgios serve at the Aussie Open? I don’t think he will play. But in the middle of next year, in Wimbledon, it could be that time.” Former double world champion Peter McNamee agrees with Arthurs that it will only be at Wimbledon that fans will see Kyrgios back to his best: “I don’t know if he’ll make it to the Aussie Open or not, I have no insight, but he won’t be at his best be,” he said.

Australian Open boss Craig Tiley expects Kyrgios in Melbourne next month at least “in some form”. Tiley said in an interview: “Hopefully he will play because Nick is a crowd favorite. We love watching Nick and enjoy having him around. He will be the best judge of that. We will be watching Nick in one form or another Have here in January.”

However, it sounds more like we’ll see Nick Kyrgios as a lot of things in Melbourne – but not a serious participant in the tournament.
