Walter Holds Steady Despite Speculation Over Future as HSV Coach

When Tim Walter was asked a third time about the debate about his job as HSV coach on the Sky microphone before the game in Nuremberg, he reacted irritably. “How many times should I say it? My job is to prepare the team here today,” said Walter – and in the direction of reporter Hartmut von Kameke: “I think I’ve already answered every question from you three times. It’s just about us winning a game today.” That’s what HSV did, winning 2-0 at the club. And yet Walter had to talk about his future again afterwards – also because sports director Jonas Boldt had avoided making a clear commitment to the coach.

Walter didn’t want to speculate. And he also did not want to take part in the discussions about his future, which Boldt had not ended with his statements a few minutes earlier. Rather, and separate from the first half of the season analysis with his manager next week, Walter pointed out that they sit down together after every game.

Walter does not participate in discussions about his job

“It’s not like we never talk,” Walter said. “We’ve already lost a few games before.” Even during the good start to the season, they “didn’t do everything right” – currently HSV, which has been in poor form recently and has by no means improved in Nuremberg, isn’t doing “everything wrong,” explained Walter.

It is important “that we talk about it, that we address exactly what we can perhaps improve on.” At all levels. Walter mentioned the staff, the office, the scouting department, the work of sports director Jonas Boldt and sports director Claus – but also that of his coaching team and his own.

HSV coach Walter admits: “Demands are not always met”

“Our expectations are high, but we haven’t always fully met them,” said Walter, considering 31 points and third place in the table after the first half of the season. “But we have definitely developed something – and we would do well to talk about it. Also about what we can do better, because that is our claim.” At least in terms of the result, HSV lived up to its own expectations in the last game before the winter break. But he didn’t cheer more than usual because of the pressure that was currently on him.

“That’s not true,” Walter replied to a corresponding question at the press conference. “I’m always happy about victories, I’m always happy for the boys.” And they were happy, not least, to have won for their coach. “Sure, too,” said Robert Glatzel, but like Sebastian Schonlau before him, he added that the victory was important for everyone: “For us as a team, for him. We’re all in the same boat and of course we’re happy about it.” Glatzel revealed that all the players were aware of “what the mood would have been like if we hadn’t won today.” Luckily for Walter, it remained in the subjunctive, otherwise he would have had to answer even more unpleasant questions – including about his future.

Future as HSV coach? Walter is confident

“It’s always good for the coach when we win,” stated Schonlau, but didn’t want to increase the focus on Walter. “Our focus wasn’t on the coach all week. Nobody had to go up to him and hug him the whole time,” reported the central defender and praised: “He’s already marching further away from the front. Just like he has done for the last two and a half years.” And Walter seems confident that there will be a few more months to come.

At the end of the press conference he also said: “Now we gather strength and then we fire everything out in the second half of the season so that we can ultimately take our big step.” He used the word “we” in all of his formulations, mind you. HSV – together with Walter in the future too?
