Matthias Walkner is due to return to Austria on Wednesday after his serious fall in California. As KTM sports director Pit Beirer reported, Austria’s motorcycle figurehead still has to prepare for one or two operations after his foot injuries.
Walkner had a serious crash in preparation for the Dakar Rally last week and was operated on in Palm Springs immediately afterwards. The rescue chain worked very well, reported Beirer. Two of three veins to the ankle were severely damaged, but the quick intervention preserved the most important functions. “Only afterwards can you make sure that the bones are all in the right places again, because that requires a bit of puzzle work for the doctors who then have to get to work,” said Beirer.
