International Basketball. In August, the United Nations assembly ratified the Philippines’ proposal,
supported by over 70 nations. Basketball thus becomes the first team sport to have its International Day recognized by the UN. The day coincides with the one in which, in 1891, the first match was played in the gymnasium of Springfield College, in Massachusetts. Basketball has been part of the Olympic program since its introduction at the 1936 Berlin Games. Basketball has grown to become the second most popular team sport in the world: FIBA estimates
that at least 450 million people play it today.
