Two out of two: Marten Van Riel also leaves top players behind in Bahrain in the half Ironman | Triathlon

A field of participants with a high level could not deter Marten Van Riel. The Belgian triathlete wanted to continue his strong return at the Ironman.

Due to a persistent ankle injury, Van Riel’s sporting plans were completely derailed in recent years. With a victory at the half Ironman in Brazil two weeks ago, he picked up the thread again.

And the Belgian was also immediately alert in Bahrain. After swimming 1,900 meters he was in a leading group with 8 top players.

At the end of the 90 km cycle, Van Riel opened up the race completely. He fully opted for the attack, together with German Wilhelm Hirsch. Together they drove away from the thinned out group for more than a minute and a half.

In the half marathon it quickly became clear that our compatriot had the legs to wear down his opponent. The German quickly disappeared from Van Riel’s wake, but Henri Schoeman and Max Stapley did appear.

Too late, because Van Riel took his second great win in a row. Schoeman – good for bronze at the Rio Games – followed at 1’28”, Stapley completed the podium after 2’58”.
