Tulum Airport takes flight: it could take away half of its passengers from Cancun – El Sol de México

The new Tulum airport, which President López Obrador will inaugurate this Friday, could take away up to half of the passengers received by the Cancun terminal, the second most important in the country. Between January and September, Cancún International Airport received 12.1 million passengers, according to figures collected by Datatur. In that sense, the new Tulum terminal could receive more than four million passengers, according to estimates by Fernando Gómez Suárez, sector analyst.

In its first stage, the terminal will have the capacity to receive 5.5 million tourists per year, according to data from the federal government itself.

The specialist said that Tulum has more potential in its startup than the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), which so far this year barely exceeds two million passengers, indicates the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC).

As of this Friday, companies such as Aeroméxico and Viva Aerobus already have confirmed operations to the new terminal in the Mexican Caribbean.

The eagle knight’s company told El Sol de México that starting Saturday it will have two daily flights from the Mexico City International Airport (AICM). Viva Aerobus, meanwhile, will have routes to Tulum from AIFA, AICM, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Tijuana, as announced since August.

International airlines also already have plans to fly to that Mayan destination, such as Delta Airlines, which starting in March will have a direct flight from Atlanta, United States.

“It will reduce passengers to Cancún. Since it was concessioned to Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), half of the passengers who arrive at that terminal do not go to that destination, they travel to the Riviera Maya and Tulum,” commented Gómez Suárez.

An analysis by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) indicated that the Tulum airport looks like a gateway to the Quintana Roo tourism market, a destination that is expected to consolidate worldwide, due to saturation problems in the terminal. Cancún and the limited capacity of Cozumel and Chetumal.

The airport will be inaugurated before the start of the winter season, one of the strongest for domestic and international tourism. Eduardo López, analyst at Grupo Financiero Ve por Más (BX+), considered that the success of this terminal will depend both on the infrastructure it has at the time of its inauguration, and on the announcements of routes and frequencies by the airlines.

However, specialists agreed that the terminal will benefit from the start of operations due to the winter season, which lasts until February, in which tourists from the United States and Canada, mainly, travel to Mexican beaches. The new airfield, which will be operated by the Army through the Olmeca-Maya-Mexica Airport, Railway, Auxiliary and Related Services Group (GAFSACOMM), was announced by President López Obrador in October 2020.

The passenger terminal is the largest building in the complex, with more than 70 thousand square meters, of which 1,400 meters are intended for commercial premises. Infrastructure planning was carried out by the Army Corps of Engineers and authorized by the AFAC. During the construction process, more than 17 thousand civilian jobs were generated and more than a thousand units of heavy machinery and rolling stock were deployed.
