Triumphs and Achievements: A Look at Deutschlandsberg’s Sporting Year 2023

From Deutschlandsberg’s perspective, the sporting year 2023 brought some successes again – everything was outshone by three young women from Frauental who made it to the big stage.

DISTRICT OF DEUTSCHLANDSBERG. The sisters Dorina and Ronja Klinger had the best year of their careers together on the beach volleyball world tour: top ten placements, finals in the “Queen of the Court”, home European Championships in Vienna, national champions and, as the crowning glory, the spectacular Qualifying for their first World Cup.

Julia Scheib, also from Frauental, also celebrated her World Cup debut this year: after almost two years off due to injury, she really got off to a flying start in the Alpine ski circuit in 2023. Most recently, the giant slalom specialist also achieved her first top ten placement in the World Cup.

And the next ski talent from the district is already ready: Paolo Eberhard from St. Josef is the Styrian champion in giant slalom and has won the West Cup and the school district championship title – at just eleven years old, he was faster than everyone else.

New blood in the starting blocks

The girls are also promising: Olivia Sungi from Wies as well as Melina Regner from Stainz and Helena Gutschi from Deutschlandsberg won a world title in acrobatic dance. Eight-year-old Livia Walter from Bad Schwanberg was successful in a US triathlon and 16-year-old Alisah Reiterer from Lannach shines in figure skating on the international stage.

Strong school sports

The MINT-MS Bad Schwanberg has made it to several state finals not only in football, but also in volleyball and handball – both for boys and girls. The music MS Eibiswald, which has won the cross-country trophy for the 19th time, remains the undefeated dominator in cross-country running. For the second time, MS 1 Deutschlandsberg won the national championship title in the chess school league. And the BG/BORG Deutschlandsberg won the Styrian title in school tennis.

Speaking of championship titles: There have been plenty of them for Claudia Müller – she won a sixth world championship title and six more state championship titles in winter swimming. The Stainzer native also completed an ultra triathlon for the first time this year – and promptly won it. Equally impressive: the world record attempt by Wolfgang Lampl, Rene Ganshofer and Jürgen Brunner from the Koralm Trail Running Club through the Koralm Tunnel.

Markus Hartinger from Wettmannstätten was also fast again: The runner won further national championship titles in road and cross-country running and won the half marathon at the Vienna City Marathon.

The Lannach running team also collected titles: above all Christina Pichler, who became Styrian champion on the road and in cross-country running. Markus Bretterklieber was even crowned the first ever Austrian champion in the obstacle run. There are also countless team and junior titles, including European championship titles in biathle, triathle and laser run.

Other state champions from the district: Lisa Hahnbammer and Robert Sackl from the Stainz dog school and Verena Hiden from St. Stefan/St., who has already won her sixth state championship title in judo – at the age of only 20.

The judoka, together with kickboxer Marco Masser, also represented Austria at the European Games. Masser previously won his third title as Styrian Grand Champion, 20-year-old Wieser also competed at the European Championships.

ESV Eisblume Lannach, ESV Wies-Wiel and ESV Drei Eiben Eibiwald celebrated state championship titles in stock sports – the Wieser and Eibiswalder are promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga.

The Wiese footballers also celebrated their second promotion in a row. Sports shooter Günther Grün achieved promotion to the first Slovenian league, and footballer David Haas achieved the same in Thailand. The golfers from GC Schloß Frauenthal and the table tennis players from SK TT Deutschlandsberg have each been promoted to the highest Styrian league, while wheelchair basketball player Markus Theißl managed to stay in the league with the national team at the European Championships.
