Top Seeds Upset: Peter Wright Knocked Out of Darts World Cup

Dec 20, 2023 at 11:31 PM Update: a day ago

Peter Wright was immediately eliminated from the Darts World Cup in London on Wednesday. The Scottish world champion of 2020 and 2022 lost without a chance to Jim Williams (3-0). It is the biggest sensation of the tournament so far.

The 53-year-old Wright had nothing to say to Williams, who did not even have to play his best darts to beat the world top. It was still exciting in the first two sets (3-2 and 3-2), after which Wright fell through the lower limit in the third set and lost 3-0 in legs.

Two-time world champion Wright, like other top athletes, was allowed to skip the first round. So he died immediately in the second round. The Welshman Williams will be Raymond van Barneveld’s opponent in the third round, provided the Dutchman survives the second round. ‘Barney’ will play against the Pole Radek Szaganski on Friday.

Wright is already the second top player to be immediately eliminated from this World Cup. On Tuesday, James Wade lost, who was in the semi-finals at Alexandra Palace two years ago. Three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen easily qualified for the third round on Tuesday.

Wright throws a pitifully low average

Wright’s average against Williams was pitifully low: 83.9 per three darts, while Williams averaged 90.45. The former world champion mainly failed in the doubles. Only four of his eighteen attempts at throwing were successful. Williams did better with nine out of seventeen.

The Dutch also played at the World Cup on Wednesday. Richard Veenstra won 3-0 against Ben Robb to reach the second round. The curtain fell for Christian Kist. He lost 3-0 to the only sixteen-year-old Englishman Luke Littler.

Littler’s average was absolutely phenomenal at 106.12 points. Kist did not come close to that with 90.55.
