Jannik Sinner played some great games on the court last season

Yes, it’s always the same thing with top 10 lists. One agrees with the majority of the selection, the other complains about the lack of highlights that are particularly important to him. You can’t please everyone anyway – and let’s be honest: If, for whatever reason, the joy of digitally browsing through the ranking positions doesn’t meet your expectations, you’ll at least be very annoyed about it.

With this in mind, here are, in our absolutely subjective opinion, the most exciting men’s games of the tennis year that has just ended. Have fun – or not:

10th place: Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic – Davis Cup Finals Malaga – semifinals

Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic had the pleasure three times in the last two “real” weeks of the season. Only the final at the ATP Finals in Turin was a fairly clear affair for the Serb. In the second singles of the Davis Cup semi-finals in Malaga, the Italian had learned his lessons from what was a bitter defeat for him and with persistence won the 24-time Grand Slam champion 6:2, -2:6,-7: 5-Success the cutting off. The next day, the Azzurris were crowned Davis Cup winners for the second time in history.

9th place: Andrey Rublev vs. Holger Rune – ATP Masters Monte Carlo – final

Finally no reason for Andrey Rublev to beat himself up with a bat. The Russian achieved his first full success at an ATP Masters 1000 event this year. In the final in Monte Carlo, the man from Moscow and the rarely cool northerner fought each other for well over three hours in the best clay court tennis style. In the end, Rublev was happy about the 5:7, 6:2, 7:5 match win.

8th place: Jannik Sinner vs. Carlos Alcaraz – ATP Masters Miami – semifinals

Jannik Sinner versus Carlos Alcaraz, that could be one of the most impressive rivalries of the next ten or 15 years. The two youngsters gave us more than just a small foretaste in the semi-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami. Alcaraz had previously won the “fifth major event” in Indian Wells and practically threw everything into the scales against the South Tyrolean, but in the end Sinner usually had the better answers. The highlights of the three-set game are worth it, a real treat!

Platz 7: Francis Tiafoe vs. Jan-Lennard Struff – ATP World Tour Stuttgart – Finale

Jan-Lennard Struff had probably his best run in 2023 and one of the most annoying injuries of his career. Just before Wimbledon, “Struffi” had to interrupt his season due to a hip injury. Before that, however, he showed chip-and-charge tennis at its best in Stuttgart – even if the American Frances Tiafoe too often had the better answers in the final of the ATP World Tour 250 event at Weissenhof. The tiebreak in the deciding set was particularly tough.

6th place: Grigor Dimitrov vs. Alex de Minaur – ATP World Tour Rotterdam – quarterfinals

Anyone who has a heart for highly athletic achievements will suffer some – thank God harmless – palpitations during the quarter-final clash between Grigor Dimitrov and Alex de Minaur at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Rotterdam. What the two opponents have conjured up with absolute dedication on the center court is something you want to enjoy time and time again. What was significant was the match point of the game, which concluded an incredibly intense deciding set.

That’s it for part one of our top 10 list. This weekend we will show you places five to one in our selection.
