Los New York Giants They have had little to celebrate this season, and yet, Tommy DeVito He has become quite a figure for his fans. The rookie quarterback has earned the respect of teammates and fans because of his toughness, but equally important, he has had a good connection with the fans because of his attitude and Italian heritage..

On the field, the 25-year-old is 3-3 as a starter. With the talent around him and the injuries, that record has been a pleasant surprise in New York… and of course, in New Jersey.

a different star

DeVito has not risen to stardom because he is a particularly talented quarterback. In some ways, his star is more like Tim Tebow’s than Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady, or even players of Tony Romo’s stature and charisma. But Tebow had a Heisman Trophy and came from the powerful Florida Gators.

No, Tommy’s charm relates more to figures from a handful of parties, like Devlin “Duck” Hodges in Pittsburgh or Tony Robinson in Washington DC. Quarterbacks more like the average fan, who have few opportunities to excel in professional sports but, even for a moment, fulfill the dream. Maybe the closest is the “Linsanity” when Jeremy Lin wore the colors of the New York Knicks.

After finishing his collegiate career at the University of Illinois, DeVito was passed over in the NFL Draft and only had the opportunity to play because the Giants’ two main quarterbacks, Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor, were injured, constantly banged up behind a porous offensive line.

At that time, DeVito rose to fame not for anything he did on the field, but for the contrast in lifestyle with other quarterbacks, still living at his parents’ home in Cedar Groves, New Jersey.

“Everything I need is at home. I made the decision because of the stress that comes with being a rookie in American football, especially as a quarterback. There are many things happening, many together. So everything that is beyond football is handled by my family,” confessed the 25-year-old quarterback.

Already on the field, DeVito threw three touchdown passes in the win by 31-19 over the Washington Commandersand after a close victory against the New England Patriots, orchestrated a last-minute comeback to surprise the Green Bay Packers in Week 14.

A sign and a representative rise to fame

Much of the Giants quarterback’s identification with the public is his Italian heritage, particularly coming from a small town in New Jersey. As a nod to his roots, the quarterback began to celebrate by raising his arm and making a gesture, bringing his fingertips together upward, in an expression considered “very Italian.” Giants fans have identified with this celebration and it has become a popular celebration iEven in high school sports.

To finish painting the picture, DeVito is represented by Sean Stellato, who rose to fame for his outfit in the duel against the Packers. Stellato, also of Italian descent, was in the band wearing a trench coat and fedora, a classic Italian-American look in the movies.

Stellato was also a quarterback in his youth, and although he did not reach the level that DeVito now has, he was one of the best quarterbacks in the state in high school and has become a figure in New York and New Jersey, even being selected to the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.

The pizzeria affair

Perhaps the biggest controversy of DeVito’s career is not related to the football field, but to a small pizzeria in Morristown, New Jersey. According to the owner of Coniglio’s Old Fashioned pizzeria, they had agreed to an appearance with the quarterback for Tuesday, December 19, however, Stellato would have asked for double the initial payment to attend.

Nino Coniglio, owner of the business, accused what happened on social networks, apologizing to those who had already purchased tickets to the event. After the disagreement, the Giants player showed up at the business, without charging anything, to smooth things over and make his word valid.

Stellato was not present and it was later revealed that he would now only handle matters related to sports contracts, leaving marketing to another representative. An ordinary day in the life of a 25-year-old quarterback who still lives at his parents’ house.
