Timo Werner: Where Will He Land Next?

Striker Timo Werner (27) is allowed to leave RB Leipzig on loan in the winter. Sports director Rouven Schröder (48) told him this in a personal conversation (BILD reported exclusively).

This means: In the next few days and weeks, Werner will have to decide where he wants to fight for his return to the national team and his ticket to the European Championship. But which clubs are actually suitable for Werner?

Stuttgart: Werner once grew up at VfB. And the striker is still very close to his former club, for which he stormed until 2016 (103 games/14 goals). Coach Sebastian Hoeneß (41) knows Werner from Leipzig, where Hoeneß was a youth coach until 2017. Although VfB has no need in attack, there is still a risk of the departure of Serhou Yadaly Guirassy (27), who can leave the club in the winter with an exit clause of 17.5 million euros. Then there would be a place available in the squad. Also interesting: According to BILD information, Werner is currently building a house in Stuttgart. Frankfurt: Recently there were rumors that Eintracht was interested. With the departures of Kolo Muani (Paris Saint-Germain) and Jesper Lindström (Naples), the SGE has earned well over 100 million euros – and wants to arm itself in the storm in January. Sports director Markus Krösche (43) values Werner very much. As RB Sport boss, he once extended Werner’s contract and sold him to Chelsea FC. Krösche recently said on BILD TV: “Timo is a great player who has proven that he can play at a very high level and score goals. But it’s not an issue for us.” Is the issue getting hot again now?

Benfica Lisbon: Sounds wild at first – but it could definitely fit! Roger Schmidt (56) lets Werner play football at Benfica. He has also proven how he can get stars out of a slump in form – most recently with Mario Götze (31). Schmidt got the offensive star back on track in Eindhoven and enabled him to take part in the World Cup in Qatar. Werner also wants to jump on the European Championship bandwagon with good performances and, above all, playing time. Manchester United: Coach Erik ten Hag (53) is under pressure at the Red Devils – and wants to refresh the squad. The English could definitely afford Werner’s salary (10 million euros). According to BILD information, there is no truth to ManU’s alleged interest. However: Werner had not yet received clearance in Leipzig either. And the transfer window doesn’t open until January 1st.

Was will Werner?

He missed that too because of adductor problems Top game on Saturday (6.30 p.m./Sky) in Dortmund. It fits his overall situation: the goalscorer was recently missing due to back problems and an infection. He has only scored two goals this season and lost his regular place. He is currently only the number four striker behind Lois Openda (23), Benjamin Sesko (20) and Yussuf Poulsen (29).

According to BILD information, Werner is said to be more open to a change than he was a few weeks ago. But staying is still by no means out of the question. Werner is attached to Leipzig and has not finished with the club. And one thing is also clear: When it comes to a transfer, everything really has to be right for him!

When asked by BILD, sports director Rouven Schröder said: “Timo is our player. We have great confidence in his abilities and extremely value him as a person. Our wish is that he prevails at RB Leipzig. Of course, we will also discuss further options with him.”

Finding a new club shouldn’t be that easy. Werner still has a good reputation, but recently he has not been able to build on his strong first years at RB (95 goals in 159 Bundesliga games between 2016 and 2020).

In addition: With an estimated 10 million euros, he is one of the biggest earners at RB. It is possible that Leipzig would have to cover part of his salary if he were to go on loan.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose (47) says about Werner’s personality: “What would I advise him? Fight, work, keep going. This is our boy who has already proven his qualities. He is one of our squad players, everyone is welcome and has the task of playing the best possible football. I’m thinking of André Silva, Kevin Kampl, Benjamin Henrichs and Yussuf Poulsen – they all had difficult phases. Yussi fought his way out again and again and is rewarded.”

And further: “Timo is always running, he accelerates. I expect him to lead the way with his quality and his CV and to inspire the team. For me it’s about signals and things that help us as a club. Timo isn’t far away, he now has a few small injuries. But I would like him to get through this phase.”

Werner should generate returns at RB Leipzig

With more playing time in Leipzig or at another club, he could recommend himself to national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) again. And stand in the shop window. Because Werner, for whom RB transferred around 20 million euros to Chelsea in the summer of 2022, should generate returns sooner or later. That’s why, according to BILD information, the club doesn’t want to sell it in its current form, but rather just lend it out.
