Thomas Wandschneider’s Success at the 5th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2023 Tournament

From December 11 to 17, the 5th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2023 tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates, specifically in Dubai, which brought together a total of 321 athletes from 47 countries this week. The Xàtiva Badminton Club athlete Thomas Wandschneider traveled there to participate once again in an event as important as this one and close the 2023 season.

Next, we review the German’s performance in the tournament. We started with the WH1 men’s singles event where Thomas started as the number two seed in the tournament and was placed in group B where he achieved victory against his two rivals, one of them the Korean Lee Sam Seop. With these two victories, they secured their place as first in the group to the final phase and thus avoided the round of 16 match.

In the quarterfinals they met again with the Korean Lee Sam Seop who managed to overcome the round of 16 against Mohammed Jawad Khadim Alamshani. Thus, the quarterfinal round repeated the group match, but this time the Korean showed more opposition to Thomas who needed three sets to get a place in the semifinals. The German won after 56 minutes by 21-19, 11-21 and 22-20 where we can see that the first and third sets were very equal and decisive for the victory of the CB Xàtiva player.

The semifinal was against the Chinese player Yang Tong, who won in two sets, 21-11 and 21-13, against Thomas, who took its toll on the effort of the previous round. However, the German finished with a new bronze in an international competition as important as this.

On the other hand, in the men’s doubles event WH1-WH2, he was paired with his usual partner, Rick Cornell Hellmann, adding a new bronze medal after losing in the semifinals.

In the doubles event Thomas and Rick started as number two seeds, being placed in group B where they achieved two victories, one of them hard fought against the Japanese Takumi Matsumoto and Keita Nishimura in an intense match that was decided in the third set 22-20, 12-21 and 21-16.

The history of the singles was repeated again, Thomas and Rick avoided the quarterfinal crossing to once again face the Japanese couple, Takumi Matsumoto and Keita Nishimura, but this time they comfortably beat them in two sets by 21-13 and 21-16. Already in the semifinals they met the pair from the Chinese delegation formed by Mai Jian Peng and Qu Zi Mo who won, despite the fight of the Germans, by 21-11 and 21-13, to later become champions of the tournament.

In summary, Thomas Wandschneider closes a great season in which he has managed to be in the final phase of all the tournaments played and regularly within the top three places.

1st Provincial Conference “Sports Games of the Valencian Community” Benjamin category.

Last Saturday, December 16, the opening day of the provincial phase of the “Jocs Esportius de la Comunitat Valenciana” in the youngest category was held in the town of Valencia. The CEIP Ramiro Jover sports facilities brought together 15 athletes from clubs and schools in the province of Valencia.

The Xàtiva Badminton Club was attended by Aarón Fasanar who participated in the singles and doubles events, in the latter partnering with Jorge García from CB San Fernando de Valencia. On this first day, the Setabense managed to win two of the four matches played, leaving very good feelings, compared to some of the athletes who were candidates for first places at the end of the season.

The youngest athletes from the Xàtiva Municipal Badminton Sports School did not participate in this first day because they have only been practicing badminton for three months and are not yet in a position to play matches, but they continue working weekly to try to have representation in the next quote.
