The International Federation of Football Historians and Statisticians (IFFHS) has published the results of the plebiscite for the best footballer in the world in 2023, where the winner is chosen by the votes of the IFFHS editorial office and experts from various continents. In 2020 and 2021, the award went to Robert Lewandowski, while last year’s winner was Leo Messi. Now the winner of this plebiscite is Erling Haaland, a Manchester City player, who scored 208 points. The top three are completed by Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain (105 points) and the aforementioned Messi (85 points).
“In 2023, Haaland received the player of the year award from us. It is a great and well-deserved success,” we read in the IFFHS article. The Norwegian won against Manchester City this season, among others. Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Cup. Apart from Haaland, this list also includes three other Manchester City players – Rodri, Kevin De Bryune and Bernardo Silva.

Haaland has also been effective for Manchester City this season. The Norwegian scored 19 goals and provided five assists in 22 games, but has missed the last six games due to bone strain. Haaland scored a total of 50 goals during the current calendar year. His contract with Manchester City expires at the end of June 2027.
