The XXVII South American School Games: Chile Hosts and Excels

The XXVII South American School Games, Santiago 2023, which took place in Chile from December 4 to 9, have come to an end. This continental sporting event, considered the largest in its category, sought to contribute to sporting, cultural and exchange development among young people from the twelve participating nations.

This was the fifth time that our country received this competition, the IX edition being organized in Talca in 2002. For this opportunity, the disciplines considered were chess, athletics, adapted athletics, handball, basketball, futsal, judo, swimming, table tennis , volleyball and as a guest sport, para swimming was present.

On this occasion, the national team had the participation of 19 athletes from the Maule region, in the disciplines of athletics, adapted athletics, swimming, para swimming and men’s volleyball, who achieved an outstanding participation, after adding six gold medals. , two of silver and two of bronze.

The Seremi of Sports, Iván Sepúlveda, said: “We are very proud of the Mauli athletes, who represented Chile in the Sudamericano Escolar, which has just ended in Santiago. The medals obtained confirm the good performance in the Maule region. We saw it like this in the Pan American and Parapan American Games, Santiago 2023 and Maule is standing out as one of the country’s sporting powers and that makes us very proud.”

In this regard, the Regional Director(s) of the IND, Zenén Valenzuela, assured: “Standing out in some area at the national level is worthy of praise, then doing so at the international level is making history and not everyone manages to make history, talent and perseverance are needed. . Gold medal of life to the athletes, coaches, families and institutions of the Maule region. The ten medals obtained in the Sudamericano Escolar put our region in the showcase. “Sport is a social phenomenon, which generates adhesion, pride and joy shared transversally.”

The most outstanding athletes from the area on this occasion were Bastián Montecino, who won 5 gold medals in the para swimming, in the 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle events.

“It was a nice experience to participate in this South American, it was impressive, I achieved very good marks, which makes me very happy,” said the athlete from the Promesas Maule program, which is executed by the IND and financed by the Regional Government. In this regard, his coach, Ricardo González, who was nominated for the Chilean para swimming team, assured: “We just finished the tournament and the results were magnificent with Bastián Montecino, this makes us very proud.”

In adapted athletics, Ingrid Vásquez, who also belongs to Promesas Maule, achieved silver in the 80m and the 5*80m relay, as well as bronze in the long jump, which contributed to second place overall for women. Regarding this great participation, Maulina commented: “It was a nice experience, difficult, but very nice. I learned a lot of things, so I’m very happy with everything.”

Also in adapted athletics, Matías Méndez achieved third place in the shot put.

Finally, Emilio Carrillo added a gold in conventional athletics in the 5*80m relay: “It was a fun experience, although I couldn’t perform my best due to injury, but I was still able to get a medal in the relay. “I really liked meeting more people and having a good time.”

In athletics, Josefina Pradenas achieved fourth place in the 400 meter event, the same position as Camila Méndez in the high jump. For its part, men’s volleyball, which was represented by the Linares Institute, achieved fifth place, after beating Uruguay in that definition.
