Before Adam Silver took over in 2014, David Stern served as league commissioner. A function which necessarily implies a certain self-control in the media, which the latter has clearly not always displayed.
For many, he remains one of, if not the greatest executive of a professional sports league in history. At the head of the NBA between 1984 and 2014, David Stern played a big role in its international growth. His character proved to be very appreciated throughout the league, even if he did not escape the controversies linked to this type of responsibilities. He even happened to create some on his own.
David Stern’s murderous and borderline response to a journalist
In 2012, when the NBA still temporarily owned the New Orleans Hornets franchise, the latter inherited the 1st pick of the Draft. A rather comical scenario which quite logically provoked some incendiary rumors. Many fans therefore wondered if all this was not the result of a plot. The famous radio journalist Jim Rome therefore took the liberty of asking Stern:

Jim Rome : We all know there is speculation that the Lottery may have been rigged. I know you like conspiracy theories, so did you resort to fakery on this one?
David Stern: I have two answers to offer to this question. Already, the first is “No”. The second is “Shame on you for asking that.”
Perceptibly raised, the league commissioner undoubtedly thought the subject was closed with this clarification. However, faced with the insistence of his interlocutor, he subsequently showed himself to be much more incisive:
Jim Rome : You know, I understand why you’re telling me that, but I also have to respectfully explain myself. I feel it’s my job to ask you because people are wondering! I know you think this is ridiculous, but I don’t think the question is ridiculous. Because I know some people think that.
David Stern: Have you finished banging your wife or not yet?
A response which did not refer to any existing legal file targeting Rome, but which simply sought to show that the question posed to him was tendentious. This method obviously earned criticism from Stern, who ended up expressing regret a few days later.
Renowned for his work in bringing the NBA into new spheres, David Stern has not always been impeccable during his tenure at the head of the league. Jim Rome can attest to this.
