The Trick Corner Kick that Backfired: RSCA Futures vs. KV Oostende

The match between RSCA Futures and KV Oostende in the Challenger Pro League ended in a goalless draw on Saturday evening. Not much to mention, but the audience at Heysel did see a corner kick from KVO go painfully wrong. What was once a trick to surprise the opponent on a corner, soon ended very badly for the visitors.

Not much happened in the almost empty King Baudouin Stadium, although the visitors did hold their breath on the hour mark. Two Ostend players took care of a corner, with one touching the ball slightly and walking away. Technically speaking, the corner had already been taken and Anderlecht noticed that almost immediately. A Purple & White player ran away with the ball, while the KVO players looked on in amazement and clearly did not understand what was happening. The ref – rightly so – did not intervene and the visitors suddenly faced a counter, which was not completed by RSCA’s Futures.

We have seen this ‘trick’ pop up before in the past. You may remember Sacha Kljestan’s (ex-Anderlecht) corner kick a few years ago. The midfielder, who then played for the New York Red Bulls, saw a teammate briefly touch the ball before taking the corner. The corner had in fact already been given and so Kljestan checked with the line judge before dribbling the ball into the field and offering Ronald Zubar the 2-2.
