The Road to Paris 2024: Olympic Archery Qualification Update

We are now six months away from finishing the long journey Olympic archery qualification for the Paris 2024 Games. At the moment, 61 quotas (32 men’s, 29 women’s) out of 128 have already been officially assigned, while all the others will be distributed next year between mid-March and June 24th through continental events, Pre-Olympics and world rankings.

Italy has already obtained an individual (not nominal) pass for women thanks to Chiara Rebagliati on the occasion of the European Games, while it is still empty as regards the team events. Qualifying the trios would also be essential to be able to field 3 athletes in individual competitions, as well as competing for medals in the Team Events (single-sex and mixed).

For men, five nations obtained tickets for Paris: France (as hosts), South Korea, Turkey, Japan and Kazakhstan. The next two slots will be up for grabs in the Pan-American and European Pre-Olympics, while the World Pre-Olympic in Antalya will award three. Two countries will then be selected based on the world ranking of 24 June 2024.

Among women, however, only four teams have already qualified for the Olympics: France, Germany, Mexico and South Korea. Same rules as for men for the continental Pre-Olympics (1 place available for Europe and 1 for the Americas), while on the occasion of the Global Pre-Olympic in June in Turkey, four countries will be promoted to the Games. To reach 12 trios, also in this case two national teams will be selected via ranking.

Own the world team ranking therefore represents an important parachute for the trios not yet qualified for Paris 2024, in case even the last opportunities to hit the direct pass on the field were to disappear. Italy is in a good position especially with the men, but the women’s team can also aspire to a possible repechage, perhaps hoping for some favorable combinations.
