The Boston Celtics have been one of the best teams in the NBA since the start of the 2022-23 season. However, there is one team that has especially resisted them in the last two years: the Orlando Magic.
Despite winning more than 65% of their games since October 22, the Celtics have only been able to win in one of the last five meetings against the Magic, who have four consecutive victories against them. The last two by an average advantage of 16 points.
One of the keys to success, according to player Cole Anthony, is found in Eddie House, former Celtics player and current analyst for NBC Sports Boston. «He talked a lot about us early last season when we played them twice in Boston. “He called us a trash team, more or less,” Anthony stated, as shared by the media. Anthony is referencing House’s comments after the Magic beat the Celtics in back-to-back games in December 2022. After several Orlando players mocked House by posting a GIF of Magic guard Rafer Alston playing House on the head during the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals, he resumed his criticism of the Florida franchise.
«It looks like Mickey Mouse House. “They are very excited about two wins,” House said at the time. «Guess what, guys: you are the fifth worst team in the NBA. “With those two wins, they are still the fifth worst team in the NBA and we are still at the top of the league.”
A month later, House once again called the Magic “garbage” after their new victory against the Celtics. Subsequently, Joe Mazzulla’s team reached the Conference Finals, while Orlando had to settle for 13th place in the Eastern Conference and a record of 34-48. However, now things are more even: Orlando has a record of 14-6, the second best in the East, only behind the Celtics themselves (15-4).
The Celtics will host the Magic again on December 15. If Anthony’s words are true, the Magic will return to Boston with an extra dose of motivation, while House will have the opportunity to respond, or not, to those in Florida.
