The Inside Scoop: A Conversation with Luis Scola on Varese Basketball

VARESELuis Scola met with journalists before the Fiba Europe Cup match. An informal chat about some of the company’s technical concepts and guidelines. Names for the market? No way. Not that announcements, names and revolutions were expected. It’s not in the style of General, who prefers to work under the radar. However, some ideas are interesting material for the red and white fans.

No algorithm

There is no algorithm that determines technical choices, it does not exist anywhere in the world. At Varese Basketball there are people who work every day and make decisions. We are not governed by a computer. Just thinking about it is disrespectful to those who work so hard.

The change of coach

For us the right decision is to continue working as we are doing. Then in the offices we compare ourselves and decide which is the best situation to win. Let’s continue with Tom Bialaszewski.

The playing style of Varese Basketball

The team is trying to play with our style, but for now without success. We lack rhythm, speed, dynamism and verticality. We want to go back to playing our basketball. At the moment we can’t do it and then we also lost two players from the quintet to injury.

The objectives

We are working to win, we are not working to lose. We believe that our style of play is the key to winning. It’s not fundamentalism, we’re just not playing as we expected.

The recovery of Leonardo Okeke

Leonardo had a major injury which will cost him some time to recover. We need to be patient. We are very happy with the boy, he is training, then we will see the recovery times. We don’t do dates, I’m optimistic, then we have to evaluate day by day.

The market

Even last year there were doubts about Ross, Owens, Caruso, which we are now regretting. The players we have can do well. Now we got Skylar Spencer, who will be useful to help us win. I rule out the possibility of magical players arriving and saving us on their own. Of course they exist, but they are out of budget for our reality. We have to look for players who help us interpret our type of basketball to win games.

The ranking

Worried about the ranking? Rather busy working for Varese Basketball. I’m not worried: we have many players with potential, I don’t think we deserve this ranking. I think the team will start playing well. Like everyone else in the world, I don’t like seeing today’s ranking either. It’s clear that if we continue like this it’s not good and we will have to improve.

And speaking of the market…

From Luis Scola, as expected, no names for the market. Alone a denial (about Colbey Ross) it’s a “non-denial” on Nico Mannion. In reality, the Pallacanestro Varese front office is in full swing to secure a winger, even more so later Davide Moretti’s injury. The sacrificed would be Vinnie Shahid (promised to Vigevano in A-2). In a market very poor in names the first objective responds to the name of Nico Mannion. Probably nothing will happen, but a very concrete offer has been made by Varese to Red Mamba, who however, due to his personal ambition, would prefer to continue playing in the Euroleague. And Olimpia Milano (with Maodo Lo injured and Kevin Pangos out of action) could be the right fit for both, with Asvel del Poz in the background. Varese, however, has tried and always tries. Beyond the economic difference, it is clear that the lack of competitiveness of the current Openjobmetis does not help Mannion to turn the car in the direction of Sacro Monte. The second name, obviously much supported by the public, is that of Colbey Ross, now finished on the edge of Buducnost. This is also a very difficult operation for economic reasons and directly denied by Luis Scola. Yet there would have been continuous contacts between the parties even in the very last hours to look for a technical and economic feasibility opening. For both Mannion and Ross (who remained very attached to the Varese environment) the further significant difficulty is called buyouts to be paid to their respective teams, which would weigh on the company coffers in addition to the wages to be paid (“the teams they don’t free the players” to use Scola’s words). But for now there would be no “cooked and eaten” situations, not even Stanley Whittaker, who at the moment is not released by Sassari (as well as clearly being at a lower level than the Red Mamba and the MVP of the 2022/2023 championship).
