The NBA is unanimously considered the number one basketball league because it is where the best basketball players on the planet from all nations play, however the rest of the world is affiliated with FIBA. This leads to differences in rules that those who have only played basketball in the USA must get used to when participating in international competitions such as the Olympics and Basketball World Cup. In the FIBA rules the three-point shot is closer but you get used to this quickly and the games last forty minutes instead of forty-eight.
The rules that penalize NBA players the most who have not even participated in FIBA competitions as youngsters are the following: FIBA courts are slightly shorter and narrower and there is no three-second defensive rule, i.e. in the FIBA world defenders can stay in the area as long as they want.
This involves a significant reduction in space to which NBA players without a past in FIBA competitions have difficulty getting used to. The other rule that changes the way of playing is that FIBA balls are a little lighter and in basketball to miss a shot you just need to miss the aim by a few centimeters.
All this explains why the great NBA champions when playing nationally against foreign opponents are less dominant than when they face the same foreigners in the NBA. One of the current non-American players who performs much less in the NBA than when he plays for the national team is the Serbian Bogdan Bogdanovic, but that applies to everyone.
