The Gúdar Javalambre Region Christmas Basketball Tournament Kicks Off with Exciting First Day of Competition

The Gúdar Javalambre Region Christmas Basketball Tournament experienced the first of its three days of competition yesterday. Sixteen matches were distributed across the four venues established this year by the organization. The largest edition in terms of participating teams, with 12 men’s teams and as many women’s teams in the running, already knows some of its first semi-finalists. The event will experience its last day of the group stage this morning, while the qualifying fight is reserved for the afternoon.

The initial day of the three that make up the program allowed us to experience the first surprises of the weekend. Thus, in the men’s category, Mataró reached the semifinals, beating Casademont Zaragoza, which initially appeared as the favorite in its group. The Barcelonans overwhelmingly beat El Palo (39-114) and during the afternoon session they got rid of Casademont by a tight 68-63. Zaragoza’s reaction in the last quarter was insufficient to turn the score around.

However, the greatest emotion of the day was experienced in the confrontation between Dziki, who were playing for access to the semifinals, and Joventut de Badalona in the last afternoon session. The match went to extra time in which the victory fell to the Catalan side, which needed 45 minutes of play to win 76 – 81.

The girls

In the women’s category, Joventut de Badalona barely found any opposition from the rivals they had in their group. The Penya players reached the semifinals with two centenary scores against El Palo and El Olivar.

For its part, Valencia will also be in the semifinals after obtaining two wins against Unicaja de Málaga and La Salle de Teruel respectively. Thanks to these two victories they entered the fight for the first four places in the competition.

Regarding the presence of the rest of the representatives of the province in this championship, those who came closest to adding victory were the girls from Caja Rural who in their presentation fell by ten points (57 – 67) against Valencian L’Eliana . Equality presided over the development of all the quarters, although the partial results of all of them smiled at those of the Levantine town.

Things were worse for the boys from Caja Rural itself. In this case, in their only match on the first day, they faced Movistar Estudiantes, who beat the Teruel team by 55-87. The Anejas players held out at a good level until halftime, 43-32, after a first quarter in which they showed their nerves at having to face one of the classics of national basketball.
