The Global Championship of Horseback Archery: A Fascinating Display of Skill and Tradition

Bologna, 17 December 2023 – The richness of the equestrian world never ceases to amaze. No matter how many disciplines you think you know, there are certainly still many that you don’t have an exact understanding of. Practices that originate in the traditions of distant countries, often poorly ‘communicated’. Of which in practice we know as little as about their horses. Only recently, and in this case it must be said thanks to globalization, have we begun to know how people have fun on horseback in countries about which we have little information. What are their riding traditions and what has survived to this day of their most ancient legacies. Among the many championships and world cups, regulated by a real international federation, here stands out – with full dignity – that of Horseback Archery, archery on horseback. The 2023 one – which will end tomorrow 18 December – has 11 participating countries. The mounted archers of Saudi Arabia, the United States, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Kuwait, Kazakhstan. Canada, Indonesia, Mongolia and Thailand have competed in what is defined as a martial art rather than an equestrian one. The knight must hit a target with a bow and arrow while galloping on a horse, re-proposing the magical triad of horse-archer-skill. The global event is hosted at the AlFursan Equestrian Village in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, a location that is increasingly polarizing prestigious equestrian activities beyond the Mediterranean. The winner of the coveted Cup was the Iranian Garsha Ghoorchian, who left Mongolia and Kazakhstan to the test, in order. Today and tomorrow the competitions continue with other archery and tent pegging tests, another riding sport – apparently of Pakistani origin – which probably few people know about… Even in this case, yes it is a test of skill in which the rider, with a kind of javelin, must hit targets fixed in the ground while galloping.
