The Future of the Maradona Stadium: Negotiations and Options for Napoli

Napoli is trying to reopen the dialogue for the future of the Maradona stadium, trying to overcome tensions with the mayor Gaetano Manfredi after the back and forth of recent days on the possibility of selling the facility to the Neapolitan club.

As explained by the Naples edition of Repubblica, in fact, the company wanted to point out that a renovation project for the stadium already exists, registered during the administration of Luigi de Magistris and signed by the architect Gino Zavanella, who also designed Juventus Stadium.

In detail, the plan provides in particular for the abolition of the athletics track and a capacity of 41 thousand spectators, with the possibility of increasing. Napoli is willing to evaluate the mayor’s indications, including the issue of capacity. However, the company believes that a 60,000 seat stadium would be useless and unprofitable, also in light of the average spectators of recent seasons

President Aurelio De Laurentiis is interested in the purchase and renovation of the stadium in a 150 million euro operation: however, the offer from the Municipality is that of a long-term concession of 50 years, especially because at the moment the sale is impossible for regulatory reasons.

Option taken into consideration by the Neapolitan club, although De Laurentiis is impatient and could opt for the construction of a new stadium outside Naples, for example, in the Pompeii area, if the issue is not resolved quickly. In fact, the objective is for Napoli to become the owner of a stadium, thus increasing the economic value of the club. Meanwhile, De Laurentiis is also looking for an area for a new sports centre, as the current one in Castel Volturno is not considered sufficient for the team’s ambitions.
