There was a time in the National Series, Cuba teams and the Azucareros de Villa Clara, when the former mask Ariel Pestano, as controversial as his arch-rival Víctor Mesa, and the team’s star shortstop, Eduardo Paret, were “tough.” Always together, apparently “brothers”, but little by little that “friendship” was diluted.

In 2014, they were seen together, when Pestano returned from Mexico, after playing with the Industriales de Coatzacoalcos, of the Veracruzana Winter League. Paret was already retired from the playing fields as an active athlete, but he continued to attend the Sandino stadium.

Shortly after, Pestano retired, and Paret arrived just in time to join in the farewell of “his then brother.” But apparently this didn’t last long.

Is Paret and Pestano’s friendship over?

Then they gave the command to Pestano of the U-23 and Paret, of the Villa Clara big team. Pestano wanted the big command, the direction of the older Villa Clara, but it was not like that. And quarrels began to arise, especially because Pestano was also looking for his son to be a starter on the Villa Clara team, but Paret had other ideas.

“The Provincial Baseball Commission, together with the Provincial Sports Directorate, in consultation with the provincial authorities, decided the team directors for the next Under 23 National Series and Senior National Series. being ratified for the Sub 23 Ariel Osvaldo Pestano Valdés and Eduardo Paret Pérez as the new Technical Director of Villa Clara“, they said then.

In fact, under the leadership of Paret, Pestano Jr. had to move to the Alazanes de Granma, because he had no place within the “arangedos.” The one from Caibarién seems to have not forgiven him and on several occasions, according to sources close to the events, he was heard not speaking so well about his “friend” in the stands of Sandino.

Shortly afterwards, in 2019, after being dismissed as Villa Clara’s mentor, Paret decided to emigrate to the United States. Paret thus joined a large group of retired Cuban baseball stars such as Antonio Pacheco, Agustín Marquetti, Lourdes Gurriel and Víctor Mesa (these last two will say because of their children), who have emigrated disappointed in the Cuban reality.

For his part, Pestano remains in his “mansion” in Santa Clara, cared for by Party authorities and reappearing “from time to time” on trips abroad, such as the U-23 tournament in Nicaragua, where many wondered: What was Pestano? Hmm. Maybe in the end, they understand each other again. Nobody imagines where this story will end.
