The Evolution of Olympic Sport: A Look at the History of Rowing, Badminton, and Athletics in the Games

Rowing had been part of the Olympic program since the 1896 Athens edition, but poor sea conditions led to its cancellation [Gli Sport – Canottaggio] of competitions. The race distance was changed several times in the first editions until it was set at 2,000 meters (except in 1948 when the course measured 1,883 m). The women’s events were introduced in Montreal 1976 and until 1988 women competed in the 1,000m, before conforming to the men’s distance.

Badminton was included in the Olympic program as a demonstration sport at the 1972 Munich Games, while the first medals were awarded 20 years later in Barcelona 1992.
The matches are best of three games and a game is won when a player reaches 21 points, with at least a two point advantage, as in table tennis, otherwise the game continues up to, at most, 30 (30–29 is the score that , in any case, assign the game). A point is awarded every time a player manages to land the shuttlecock on the opponent’s court or every time the opponent commits a foul. The most common fouls are when the opponent’s return ends up outside the court or below the net; make them serve; when the shuttlecock touches the ceiling.

Athletics has always been part of the Games, included in the Olympic program in every edition. Women’s events were introduced from 1928, although initially women’s participation was limited to a small number of events (in 1928 only 100, 4×100, high and discus).
In London there are 47 medal events and there are few differences between the men’s and women’s programmes: in the race walk the men have two events (20 and 50 km), the women only one (20 km), the short distances on the obstacles (100 instead of 110) and the number of specialties in multiple tests is lower.
